“The Good Doctor” by Neil Simon and directed by Dr. Michael Andron, will kickoff the 07/08 season of JCAT (Jewish Cultural Arts Theatre), the new theatre program of the Rabbi Norman Mussman Cultural Arts Department of the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center. With its Broadway premier in 1973, “The Good Doctor” served as Neil Simon’s tribute to Anton Chekhov, arguably one of the greatest writers in Russian history. In the late 1800s Chekhov wrote humorous newspaper articles to pay for medical school. Considered Broadway’s master of comedy, Simon took eight of Chekhov’s stories and created a a laugh-out-loud vaudeville experience complete with tricky con artists, ridiculous slapstick and heartwarming musical numbers.

“The pace is frenetic at the MAR-JCC as we prepare for JCAT’s first production,” says Artistic Director Andron who along with his wife, Lilian, serving as Managing Director will lead the theater program. “Electricians and lighting specialists are busily renovating the Olemberg Social Center’s Stafman Lounge to create the intimate theatre that will become the JCAT’s home until the JCC builds its new Cultural Arts Center.”

Introducing people of all ages to the magical world of theatre, the JCAT program will provide performance and educational opportunities through classes and workshops to middle school, high school, and college students as well as to adults. It will include a summer stock theatre camp and theatre appreciation trips to New York for students and their parents.

“Working in a small theater makes us actors more aware of how close we are to the audience and we can work on emoting with more subtle expressions,” explained Joel Kahn, a high school junior in the current production. Fellow actor, Adine Mitrani, agrees saying, “Although it may be a smaller stage than what I was once comfortable with, I have definitely learned big lessons from the new JCAT program that will broaden my acting abilities. As an actor, it’s always exciting to be working with something new and different.”

Under the umbrella of the Rabbi Norman Mussman Cultural Arts Department, the new JCAT will present at least four productions per year; two to be performed exclusively by middle and high school students and two that will include college students and adults.  Adding this to the production schedule already provided by the MAR-JCC’s “Actor’s in the Gym” community theatre program, the MAR-JCC hopes to become the new center of quality community theatre in Miami.
