It seemed like the type of community celebration commonly held at your local Jewish Community Center: Local dignitaries on hand, kosher wine tasting, a musical performance by the children of the Hebrew Academy of Margate, and a spread of kosher delicacies for the taking.

But this celebration was not at the JCC; it was at Winn Dixie.

Last week, Winn Dixie celebrated the opening of its first full-service Kosher department at its Tamarac store, located at the northwest corner of University and McNab Roads.

Under the Kashrut supervision of the Baltimore-based Star-K, the new department offers deli (by the pound, the platter, or the sandwich), rotisserie chicken, grilled salmon, challah rolls, fresh cakes, and a wide array of catering services. An expanded selection of Kosher wines, dry grocery, dairy, frozen foods, and packaged meats complements the department.

"Today’s grand opening reinforces our commitment to customizing our stores to their surrounding neighborhoods," said David Durham, Tamarac store manager. "After listening to our neighbors, we found that having a Kosher deli and bakery nearby was a top priority."

Rabbi Mendy Engel, spiritual leader of Chabad of Tamarac, called the Kosher department’s opening a "joyous occasion," and offered his wishes that the store’s efforts to help the Jewish community are divinely rewarded.

"Just as God gives us blessings for keeping His laws, we hope that God will pass on His blessings to this Winn Dixie store for enabling us to keep His laws," Engel said.

Tamarac resident Barry Daly was impressed by the samples he tasted at the Grand Opening.

"This is scrumptious. This is going to be some bakery," Daly said as he munched a chocolate-filled croissant. "I’ve always shopped here, but with the added kosher offerings, it will make life a lot easier."

Recently, Winn Dixie stores throughout South Florida have begun focusing on the Kosher consumer. Customers in many area stores have noticed larger selections of Kosher products, as well as labels on store shelves prominently identifying everyday food items that are under Kosher supervision.

"Helping our consumers to identify items that are kosher is part of our commitment to every community in which we operate," said Jim Carrado, Winn Dixie’s Senior Director of Neighborhood Merchandising.

"This is just another way that we’re getting better all the time," Durham said.
