Miami coach to lead USA Open swim team
Robert Strauss of Miami has been appointed by Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel as the Head Coach for the Open Swimming Team representing the United States at the 11th Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Games will take place December 26, 2007 - January 2, 2008.
Coach Strauss has dedicated his career to teaching and coaching swimmers of all ages, including elite athletes. He has coached three high school teams and has led them each to Swimming District Championship wins, with two of the teams also winning the Water Polo State Championship. From 1971 to 1974, Strauss was awarded a scholarship to swim for the University of Miami, where he also received his Masters Degree. Since 1979, he has lectured at swim clinics in North America and in 18 countries throughout South America and Europe. He is a pioneer for the Swim Gym Swim School that opened in 1983, as well as the Swim Gym Aquatic Sports Camp that began in 1995. Strauss swam in the 1969 and 1973 World Maccabiah Games in Israel winning gold, silver, and bronze medals; the 1972 Munich Olympics; World University Games in Italy 1970 and Moscow 1973; CCCAN Games Panama in 1970 winning seven medals; and was a finalist in the Pan Am Games in Colombia in 1971.
Strauss’ wealth of experience in Swimming will provide Team USA with superb coaching skills. When asked what his expectations for the team is he replied, "I hope to bond the team with themselves and the coaches, and to offer a sense of pride and responsibility while wearing the Red, White, and Blue in Argentina."
"Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel will send a contingent of more than 600 to the 11th Pan American Maccabi Games,in the Open, Youth, Juniors and Masters categories, joining an estimated 3,000 athletes from more than 20 countries," said Phyllis Magerman, General Chair of the U.S. 11th Pan American Maccabi Games Organizing Committee.
Since 1948, Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel has sought to enrich the lives of Jewish youth in the United States, Israel and throughout the Diaspora through athletic, cultural and educational programs. The organization is the sponsor of the U.S. Team to the World Maccabiah Games in Israel, the world’s third largest international sporting event. It also sponsors U.S. participation in Maccabi competitions in Pan America, Europe and Australia and supports Jewish youth through the JCC Maccabi Games.
