On-line journal/photo galleries bring ‘March of the Living’ closer to home

More than 15,000 page visits have been logged on jewishboca.com to follow the emotional journey of 64 South Florida students and their chaperones on the March of the Living, the single largest teen Holocaust-education program in the world. Relatives and friends get to keep up with their loved ones and the whole delegation through daily journal entries and photos on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s website. Their travels started in Budapest on April 11 and culminated in Israel on April 25.

In Poland participants visited sites that included the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka and Majdanek, the Warsaw Ghetto, Cracow and Lublin. The group participated in the 3 kilometer march from Auschwitz to Birkenau on April 19 and on April 24 celebrated Israel Independence Day with thousands of teens worldwide.

Dr. Leon Weissberg, Executive Director of the Jewish Education Committee for the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County led the United State’s Southern Region delegation of 195 students and chaperones. The delegation joined 7,000 teens from 30 countries around the world, including Cuba. Teen Initiative plans party

Sixth, seventh and eighth graders can enjoy a pool party, barbecue and other activities at the Middle School Lag B’Omer Party on Sunday, May 6 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of the Greater Palm Beaches Kaplan branch, 3151 N. Military Trail in West Palm Beach. The event is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County’s Jewish Teen Initiative. Lag B’Omer is thought to commemorate the heroism of the students of Rabbi Akiva during a revolt against the Romans in 135 or the end of a plague that was epidemic among the rabbi’s students. The joyous holiday marks the end of a period of mourning. In Israel, the holiday is marked with bonfires, prayers and gatherings at Mount Meron in the Upper Galilee.

The cost of the event is $10. For transportation and other event information, call Emily Meyers at 561-615-4946 or e-mail emily.meyers@jewishpalmbeach.org. Online event registration is available at JewishPalmBeach.org/lagbomer.

Israeli Conductor to speak at Levis JCC

Thomas Elefant, founder and conductor of the Inter-Generation Symphony Orchestra of Tel Aviv will lecture on musical concepts, styles and sounds through the centuries on Wednesday, May 9th at 1 p.m. at the Phyllis and Harvey Sandler Center at the Adolph & Rose Levis JCC, 21050 95th Avenue South, off Glades Road between Lyons Road and U.S.441 in Boca Raton.

Born in Chile to Hungarian Holocaust survivors, Elefant was raised and educated in the United States and eventually made Israel his home. He has enjoyed a distinguished career as a musician, musical director and conductor, both in the U.S. and in Israel, including 12 years as Music Director and Conductor of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (Richmond, Indiana) before founding the Inter-Generation Symphony Orchestra seven years ago in Israel. The Inter-Generation Symphony Orchestra combines adult amateur musicians with young school-age children in a non-competitive environment to make music for the love of music – and that love of music is what Elefant brings to his lectures as well. "Learning about music from a conductor’s perspective is very different than from a music historian," says Elefant.

The May 9th lecture costs $4 per person; Levis JCC membership is not required. For information/reservations, call Karen at 561-558-2501.
