Jewish American Heritage Month at Posnack JCC

For the first time David Posnack Jewish Community Center located at 5850 S. Pine Island Road in Davie will celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month with three special events at the center during the month of May. Last year, President George Bush proclaimed that Jewish American Heritage Month be observed nationally in May to honor the 352 year history of Jewish contributions to American culture.

The first program on Sunday, May 6 at 1 p.m. will be the Steven Spielberg presentation of the animated fable, An American Tail, by Don Bluth. This feature film, suitable for the whole family, follows the humorous and dramatic adventures of Fievel and his mouse family who leave Russia for America, a land that they believe is without cats. The film pays homage to the countless real stories of immigrants who came to the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Admission is $5 for an adult which includes two free child admissions or $10 for families of four or more.

The second program on Sunday, May 6 at 7 p.m. will feature author and local journalist Scott Benarde, who will discuss his book, Stars of David: Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Jewish Stories, and his experiences researching it. Benarde was inspired to write the book following a backstage conversation with rock artist David Lee Roth, during which the rock star revealed he first learned to sing while preparing for his bar mitzvah. Benarde then spent five years combining his love of Judaism, journalism and rock ‘n’ roll investigating Jewish contributions to rock music from 1953 to the present time. Admission is $5 and a book signing will follow Bernarde’s talk. For the final event Rabbi David N. Young, local comic book expert and assistant rabbi at Temple Sinai North Dade will discuss "Superheroes and Jewish Roots?" on Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. According to Rabbi Young, a majority of the early comic book creators were Jewish. He will talk about the secret "Jewish-ness" of favorite comic book characters, and how their stories are part of both Jewish folklore tradition and the story of immigrant assimilation. The presentation includes clips from Superman movies. Admission is $5. For tickets and information call 954-434-0499.

Volunteers needed by Cooperative Feeding Program

According to the Cooperative Feeding Program (CFP), more than 200,000 in Broward County struggle with feeding themselves and the problem is growing each day. On Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday May 12, tens of thousands of letter carriers across the nation will do more than deliver the mail. They will fill their vehicles with millions of pounds of food to help feed hungry Americans. This bounty is created by countless Americans who put food out for their letter carrier for the Annual Postal Food Drive. Nothing else in history has "delivered" the food the way the letter carriers have managed to do. CFP needs hundreds of volunteers to help with the sorting and distribution of canned goods over the Mother’s Day Weekend. For information, call 954-792-2328 or visit: http://www.FeedingBroward.org.
